Technicaly I’m not injured as I can still run even though otday I took an extra rest day as my IT Band is just so tight. It’s been getting increasingly tight because of the imbalance at the moment with left and right legs due to the ankle fracture. Well I just couldn’t take sitting here with this tight IT band that I just can’t seem to stretch enough or should I say relieve the pressure enough. I have seen in running articles and in Runners World Magazine the Roller which is used for this particular syndrome as well as many others and always thought how “idiotic”. Well today I had to try, I was desperate. I ran down to the local running room to pick up the Pro-Tec foam roller. We’ll I’ve just used it for the first time and I’m sure I’m going to have to do this very often and especially after my runs but just using it the one time seems to have taken some pressure off already. It is incredible how tight it was. Amongst the instructions it states “if your ITB is tight, this may be uncomfortable to perform”. Uncomfortable? Are they kidding, this was excrutiating. Says later as ITB becomes looser the exercise will become less “Uncomfortable”. To increase pressure at this point, extend the supporting leg. Well after 2 minutes it’s already relieved some pressure.

Running Log :: half uphill is a bitch
Well I figured I’d do at least a half distance again and do it on the hills. Wow, what was I thinking. I was determined to run the half a bit faster and I shaved a minute off and that is on hills. I am very pleased with the time. The half was 1:38 and if you look at the hill chart I went 350′ uphill over 6.5 miles. I can say exhaustion. I will only do this run once a month because it is just to much on the IT band and the quads on the downhill portion. Then coming into Anne’s only to find out the Habs are down 3-0, glad I was out running instead of drinking beer and watching the game.
Great Hike
Well went for a great nature hike today with the girls. This was their suggestion for todays adventure. They wanted to see waterfalls and holpefully see snakes, frogs etc. Wouldn’t you know it, one of the twins finds a snake within 2 minutes. I managed to grab him and he squited something on me that really stunk. I had this horrific smell on me for the entire hike. I hope to never smell that again. We had so much fun and did manage to get up to a waterfall. So here are the pics from todays adventure. You’ll also notice some photos of the Ticats Helmet and an Argo. There was a fundraiser for cancer at the Chedoke Golf Course Stairs. I had managed to go by it last year as well. The kids loved seeing them as well as a Rotty pup.
Running Log :: feels like November Rain
Well like the GNR tune November Rain, that is what this run felt like. It’s 8C and raining out. The rain didn’t let up, nothing. When I walked out the door this morning I was so excited for my run in my new shoes and then when I went for the run, the sky completely changed. I picked up a new pair of Saucony Triumphs which are my fav shoes. After yesterdays run it was obvious the old ones were done. The other pair were much older than I thought having purchased them in November (5 months). Anyhow it was an ok run, I lost about 15 seconds waiting for a light but other than that it was good.
Running Log :: Sore Right Shin
Well the right shin was very sore today and it’s surely the overcompensating from the left ankle still healing. The left ankle was stiffening up pretty good during my 21k run on Sunday and I’m sure I overcompensated. Yesterdays run didn’t really hurt but today right from the first step it was tender then at one point i hit the paved portion of the path a bit hard on one of my turnovers so I think that didn’t help. Also my shoes I think are starting to near their end, the cushion just didn’t feel like it was there. Anyhow nothing to complain about regarding time, I still averaged a 7:34 minute mile which is great for a recovery run.
Need more like him
It’s unfortunate that we need someone like Nick to cheer us up, show us what we have and not what we don’t have (which is often something material). Just the few minutes of this clip is amazing when you see the impact on the young minds that are paying attention. He is sooooo right.
Running Log :: Quick 3 mile around block
Well lunch time and went out in the 9degrees overdressed for a quick around the block. I figured at 9C I had better throw on a long sleeve technical and a short sleeve overtop. Well I was boiling at the end. Legs were a bit tired first mile from the 13.1 miler on Sunday but it all worked out good. Still managed to have an average pace of 7:37 which I’m very happy with.
Workout :: Bagged
Ok well again to avoid traffic on my Monday commute to Toronto I decided to go in early and workout. Wow, can you say bagged. I didn’t push to hard, it’s the first workout since the pain in my hand which has subsided for now. Yesterdays 21km run has really worn me out so I did what I could do. I did some chest, back, abs and arms. Nothing great to write about but the pain is just starting slightly in the right hand again so still not ready to go back heavy that is for sure. Anyhow glad I did it for maintenance at least.
Half Marathon wind and hills
Well this was my first half distance since December 13th and my ankle fracture. The ankle wasn’t to much of an issue until about mile 11 – 12 but it really wasn’t that bad. What presented a real challenge was the wind (30km/h). I decided to throw some hill training in this half and am very impressed with my time. I did the 13.1 in 1:39:34 which is just awesome for a training run, even my heart rate was pretty steady. I never really had to push it to maintain the pace, just a great run. I even had to run around a downed tree on the waterfront trail.
Fast Food :: Kuwait
I was reading the news this morning as I do most mornings and this article was incredible. I had no idea this was also prevalant in the Middle East. We so often hear about North Ameria and I have seen its widespread effects first hand in the south but 74% of the population in Kuwait being overweight! That is insane. Jenny Craig needs an arabic name, hahahah. What is even stranger is the fact that after writing that I figured I would look up Jenny Craig to see if it is there yet. Rest assured it’s on its way. What I found was Jenny Craig has been aquired by Nestlé. What a joke, Nestlé who also owns such foods as KitKat, HÄAGEN-DAZS, Smarties, Tutles also owns Jenny Craig… Lets get them fat, then make a fortune getting them to loose the weight. I’m waiting for them to come out with a brand of treadmills.
Here is the article on Kuwait being overweight.
