That is what we need more of in Hamilton. If you are a runner like myself that is reduced to running on the local gym’s treadmill because people find it to difficult to clear their snow well here is a warning to ya. I don’t know how many tickets Hamilton hands out , if any but judging by what I’ve noticed while walking around different parts of the city, it can’t be much. There are to many sidewalks that look like trails through the forest. Nothing but a beaten path. I’m frustrated that I can’t run. How about all the poor people on those scooters (you know the people movers). They must be inside all winter this year and that is a long time. Bloody hell pay the kid down the street, do something, just CLEAR YOUR SIDEWALKS!!!

No run tonight, just the workout
Man was I dying durning my workout tonight. I did total upper body and I was sweating as if I was doing cardio workout. I opted out of the run tonight. I’m just worried about the shins, don’t want to push to hard in the beginning. Also I don’t think the other insert I put in was benificial. I’m going to go without the insert for a while and see how that plays out. I feel I land better without the insert and just the new orthotics. Anyhow it’s late and that’s it for me.
Workout new home gym

Worked out for the first time at home with the new gym and some dumbbells I purchased. This will help tremendously on days like today where Robin is working and I’m at home watching the girls. I managed to do all the exercises I would have done at the gym. Following the workout I did 35 minutes on the stair machine. Climbed the equivalent of 2055 stairs for 612 calories. Let me tell you, that machine gives a grueling workout. I am always extremely winded and dripping after a session. The battery in my heart monitor was dead so we’ll have to run the heart monitor on my next session. Tomorrow is a running day so will have to be Thursday.
Running Log :: ‘O how I Love those words
Running log — feels like forever since I wrote those words regularly. Went for 30 min run tonight. Kept the pace slow (10 min miles) while working on gait. Making sure I pick up my toes as I bring my foot forward, bringing my legs up. Keeping those mechanics through the entire 30 minutes. Did work up a good sweat. Ran for 3 miles in 30 min for estimated 460 calories.
ART :: No not with pencil or brush! Active Release
Well another session today, ultrasound on the shin and some ART (Active Release Therapy). I’ve been seeing Conor Collins for ART treatments and Ultrasound and I have to tell you I was a tremendous skeptic with regards to these types of treatments as this was the second person I’ve seen and let me tell you this stuff does work. Ok you have to make sure you do everything they tell you mind you. If you get stretches and strengthening exercises and don’t put them to work don’t expect the results. Anyhow for me, someone who has had chronic shin splints, sore groin, hip and a plethora of other symptoms this is all starting to work together. I ran on the weekend for the first time in quite some time and let me say it felt awesome. I will be running again this evening and I can’t wait. As usual, stay tuned and follow the progress. If you are someone who is in pain and need to get beyond it, feel free to post comments or ask questions. I’ll share my experiences and see if I can’t find you some useful resources.
Disney Half is now full
Well first went the Goofy and how the half is full. It’s incredible, we are only in the second week of March 2008 and already the Goofy’s Challenge and the Half Marathon are full. The full is 50% full already as well. I’m going to miss that race next year. The OC marathon had better be a go. I don’t know what I would do without my mid winter break.
Melt snow… MELT!!!!!!!
Well I’m hopeful that this snow is going to melt and we can get outside and running. There is no room on the sides of the road and far to many people don’t clear their sidewalks. I thought you get tickets for that. They have no problem handing out tickets on my car when I park illegally but I just see house after house with the “footprint trail” in front of their homes. Hopefully on Thursday some of this snow will melt and be washed away by the rain. Just have to wait and see. One thing for certain, to much rain and there will be some serious flooding.
Out of shape :: Getting back
Well I’ve really let myself get out of shape since about November. Yes I did run the Goofy but had started getting out of shape before that when the shin splints where full blown. I have continued down the spiral (beers and bad food choices since) and have managed to get my weight back up. I’m not “FAT” by any means but definitely not in the shape I’m accustomed to. I’ve got to get this extra 25 lbs off me. We’ll get our new gym at home next week and already got the stair climber (by North Face). I used it today for the first time and have to admit I’m dying and was sucking wind while on it. Anyhow I figure about 2 months to get back into the shape I’m used to now that I have the go ahead to start running again. Every other day at the moment so on the opposite days I’ll use the stair machine. Today I did 1855 steps in 30 min and burned about 533cals.
Ran Again :: WooHoo
Well I finally got the green light to run again. Today I went for a 20 min run at the gym on the treadmill. Well I really worked on my form and kept the pace right down. I noticed the left leg was getting sloppy after about 5-10 minutes so I began making sure I point the toes up as I’m bringing up the left leg. Made certain I brought up as high as I naturally bring up the right leg. I noticed that the muscle on the outside of the shin was really working from this change as well as the tissues at the front of the Ankle. I’m going to make sure to get back slowly in to it and really concentrate on the form of my gait.
My shin splints seem to be gone now. Even the little balls under the skin have been taken care of from the ultra sound. After my run I did extensive hamstring stretched. They are extremely tight and I need to really loosen these up. We no run tomorrow, I’ll use the new stair trainer that we got. Can’t wait to get some outdoor running in. The weather is just horrible, lots of snow, another storm today!
Week off :: I need it
Well I still don’t have the green light to run and my DR. appt with Dr. Levy is not till the 20th so I’m taking this week off. I did work out one day but no cardio. I’m going to relax and really let the leg heal up good. As well as the foot. I’m doing the stretches he told me to do and the strengthening exercises also. This is killing me as I am an all or nothing kind of guy. Either train, eat right and lay off the beer or I don’t train, eat like crap and drink beers. Well can’t wait till the week is over and I get the green light to start again. Also Paul and I are going to head down to Boston to watch the Boston Marathon in April. I was in Massachusetts once as a chile for a family 5th generation photo. Anyhow more details on the trip to follow. Will have to do like my Disney trip and plan a full weekend and start putting down my plans and maybe people who have been there can post some suggestions.
