Running Log :: New lift run number 2

Well this is run number two with the new lift and the new shoes (stability). Can’t believe they had me in the wrong shoes for a year as well as having leg discrepency. Quite the year! It all explains so much. Anyhow I’m working on my kitchen and rented a truck. Had to return the truck and my wife (Robin) was watching the girls so I threw on the running clothes and drove the van back and ran 2 miler home. Had the inserts in and wow does it ever feel nice. I can’t wait till the shins are all healed up. Anyhow did 2 miles in 16:59 for a pace of 8:30 min miles. Disney Here I come!!!

Leg Length Discrepancies :: MY INJURIES

DiscrepanciesWell I decided that something has to be done. I’ve always got sore hips, last year Iotibial band syndrome, my sore back, shin splints and the list goes on. I always feel like I’m not walking right and the list goes on. So today I went to a Orthotics centre to get checked out. And voilà I have a discrepancie in left and right leg. It’s a bit larger than 1cm. They gave me a lift (an insert) and wow, like a whole new world. Will surly take time to undo all the damage that has been done but just standing it it is incredible. It’s funny I had all the symptoms in the article http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/leg-length-discrepancies.shtml but because I was seeing someone different to address each one individualy nobody put it all together. Once I got this figured out I started reading and there ya have it. Also I was put into the wrong pair of shoes about a year and a half ago which rendered the situation worse. I should have been in stability shoes and I’ve been running in motion control. Just went to get motion control shoes. Walk with the lift for a week before I start running in them. Hope this takes care of it all. I will keep you all posted!!!

Another Gym night

Was contemplating a short run but finaly used my head and held off, theses shins need to heal. Headed off to the gym again tonight, how I missed the gym all this time. I feel awesome! Well did arms today followed by another 20 minutes on the bike and lastly the pool again. Did 14 minutes tonight. I’m actually not totally minding swimming. Anyhow hopeing to get back out running soon, but in the mean time I’m keeping the cardio up.

Keeping up :: back to the gym

Well back to the gym again tonight. Before going I did my abs at home as well as Yoga for stretching. Working on the stretches I got for shin splints and legs. Went to the gym to work on chest and do my cardio. Did chest workout without any major problems and then onto the bike. Did 20 min on the bike tonight and worked up a good sweat… The workouts aren’t like running but good none the less. One thing I can notice is the incredible imbalance between the two legs. I really worked on pushing down with the left leg on the bike and that really tired that leg (quad) out fast. Then following the bike, down to the pool for some lengths. Did 10 min in the pool to finish off the night. No need to say, I’m exhausted and need to keep it up.

Workout :: Keep going

Goofy ChallengeWell the shin splints are on the path to recovery and I’m not making the same mistakes as last year. Went to the gym last night to keep the cardio going in the absence of the running. Did leg workout which is greatly needed at this stage, as I have a great imbalance between the left and right sides. Didn’t realize how bad it has gotten till I worked out using one leg at a time. Anyhow I did leg workout and then did 10 min on the bike which I’ll increase and introduce as new cross train cardio. Also ran in the pool and did lengths also. Need to get back into the gym daily so last night really felt great.

Shin splints :: reading

Well I’ve been reading quite a bit of information on shinsplints these last few days (in desperation) to get past these as quickly as possible. For those suffering from them at the moment or to avoid them all together here is a good link http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/0161-shin-splints-treatment.htm . Also stick to the rule of no more than 10% increases weakly in mileage.  I should head my own advice. I’ve started the excercises mentioned in the link above and will let you know how it works for me.

SHIN SPLINTS

Well I ran a little 1km race yesterday (http://www.hamiltonmarathon.ca/) with my daughters and my legs were quite sore already and now I have full blown shin splints. I’m just doing some serious reading to find the fastest road to recovery and some good workouts to keep them away from now on. That is what I get from ramping up the mileage a bit to aggressively. Anyhow will have to cut it back 30+ percent after a bit of a relaxing week. Will go to the gym instead and do some biking and swimming. See where we go from there. The marathon in January is all booked, my airline tickets are bought and everything, so need to get through this quickly.

Running Logs :: Just getting colder and darker

Well 1st of November already, just getting colder and darker for these runs. Today was 7C(44F) for my 5:30pm run. It was still getting dark though. I’m quite stressed at the moment and wasn’t going to run but a bit of a push from my wife got me out there. I just need my marathon holiday already. Well I did a 6 mile run with sore shins but got through it. I will have to slow my pace down tomorrow to get a bit of recovery in like I’ve been doing lately! Ice, wrap and ADVIL (WOW CORPORATE PLUG :) ).

Anyhow for the stats! Ran 6 miles in 49:27 for a pace of 8:15 minute miles.  They were difficult, everything past mile number four but we’ll get there. I’m working on my absolutely poor gate at the moment. Let you know how it goes.
